AIM: Access In Motion
Fundraising Initiative
What Is AIM?
AIM: Access in Motion is an overarching idea to allow Paws for a Cause to work towards making Miami’s campus accessible for all! Under this initiative, we are able to continuously market and fundraise for our next big project, whatever it may be at the time. Think of AIM as a book and our individual projects and goals as the chapters.
Our Current Project: Making the Outdoors Accessible
Miami University is well-known for the many outdoor, recreational activities its campus has to offer. From hiking to kayaking to athletic organizations, students have numerous opportunities to get out in nature. However, many of these activities are not accessible to those in the disability community! In collaboration with the Miller Center for Student Disability Services, we are working to purchase items to change that. Students will be able to rent them from the rec center on campus! This project will be completed in five stages, with each item being purchased when its respective monetary goal is reached. Upon completion of the initiative, we will have accessible kayak and paddle board paddles, a wheelchair swing, a recumbent bike, a handcycle, and a track chair!
The Five Stages:
-
These two items will make kayaking and paddle boarding accessible for those with limited shoulder/arm mobility by eliminating the burden of the paddle weight from the user.
We will purchase one set of hinged mount paddles that can be attached to a kayak and one set of sticky cups paddles that can be attached to a paddle board.
Fundraising Goal: $1,000
-
A wheelchair swing is a unique piece of playground equipment that can be used without the user having to transfer out of their wheelchair. They just roll right on!
We plan to install this at Peffer Park, a local park local to Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio.
Fundraising Goal: $5,000
-
A recumbent bike is specially designed to allow the user to sit and peddle in a reclined position. They are supported by a full seat, with their legs extended in front of them. These bikes are great for people who may not be able to use a traditional two-wheel bicycle.
Fundraising Goal: $8,000
-
A handcycle is another kind of adaptive bicycle. This bike is peddled by motion of the hands instead of by the feet. The user is again supported by a seat with a backrest.
Fundraising Goal: $15,000
-
A Track Chair is a specially designed wheelchair made to be all terrain. While the average wheelchair (both manual and electric) is largely only successful on paved surfaces, a track chair can be taken across grass, dirt, and even sand without getting stuck! This means users on campus will be able to participate in activities like hiking on the surrounding trails.
